The Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) provide the following exemptions for service as a juror:

• Age (over 70) and do not wish to serve as a juror.
• Not a U.S. Citizen.
• No longer residing in Carson City.
• Any Police Officer as defined in NRS 617.135.
• Convicted Felon (civil rights have not been restored).
• Any person who has a fictitious address pursuant to NRS 217.462 to 217.471.
• While the Legislature is in session, any member of the Legislature or any employee of the Legislature or the Legislative Counsel Bureau.

If you do not fall under the above specific exemptions, you must have approval by the Court before you are excused from jury service.

• All requests for excusal, deferral, or disqualification must be made at least 5 working days before your report date. Generally, requests are reviewed within 2 days from the date in which they were submitted.

You may request a one-time postponement of your jury service for up to 12 weeks. When you make a request for a postponement, please be prepared to pick a date 4 weeks from your service date but not more than 12 weeks from your summons date.

If you are actually sworn to serve as a trial juror, you will receive $40 a day for your service.

Any person who has not been previously excused by the Court that fails to report for jury duty may be served with an order to show cause ordering them to appear before the Court to explain why they did not appear for jury duty. A juror who fails to show adequate cause for their absence can be held in contempt of court and shall be fined not more than $500.00, pursuant to NRS 6.040.

Normally, jury selection takes half of the first day. However, you should be prepared to stay the full day and make appropriate arrangements with child care and job responsibilities. If you are selected to serve as a trial juror, your service will start immediately.

If you are selected and serve as a trial juror, you may be excused for the remainder of the year. You are also excused from service for the following year. If you are summoned for jury duty and not selected to serve as a trial juror, you are still eligible for service throughout the remainder of the year and you may receive another jury summons. You are also not excused from being randomly selected for service for the following year.

Names for potential jurors are randomly selected from a universal list compiled of current Carson City voter registration and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles records of residents living in Carson City.
